The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) is one of the oldest political parties of Malaysia, established in August 1946 at the end of the Second World War. It was established in the cause of the communities struggle of the inter-war years, to end British colonial rule, as well as in the need for representation on behalf of the Indian Community in the post war development of the country.

Sri J.A. Thivy became the first President of the Malaysian Indian Congress. Sardar Budh Singh succeeded him in 1947. Sri K. Ramanathan became the President of the Congress in 1950. The Fifth Annual Conference was held in Johor Bahru in the year 1951 when Sri Kundan Lal Devaser succeeded Sri K. Ramanathan. The MIC joined the Alliance, the then ruling party as the third partner with UMNO and MCA in 1954. Sri K.L. Devaser was the hailed champion of the merger of the Congress with UMNO and the MCA. At the Ninth Annual Conference which was held in Teluk Anson, Perak in May, 1955, Sri V.T. Sambanthan was elected as the fifth President of the Congress. When the country obtained its independence on 31st August 1957, Sri V.T. Sambanthan was a signatory of the Merdeka Agreement. He can rightly be called one of the founding fathers of the nation. The MIC contested in two parliamentary seats in the country's first General Election held in 1955.
